music W. A. MOZART | libretto G. VARESCO | conceived and directed by DAVID PAUL | conductor GLENN LEWIS | director of production TARA KOVACH | technical director SEAN WEST | media design CAITE HEVNER | costume design JASON BRAY | lighting design TODD NONN | props master JONMICHAEL BOHACH | scenic charge SASHA SCHWARTZ | assistant scenic design SELBY SOUZA
Since IDOMENEO‘s setting and characters bear a unique, uncannily powerful relevance to our world today, AfterWARds seeks to shed light on our current refugee crisis. This design features the island of Crete engulfed by abandoned refugee lifejackets as a modern symbol the often-ignored aftereffect of war contrasted by the archaic mechanism of war, the sail of a warship, looming overhead. The sail contorts and transforms as a visual representation of our character’s collective emotional state.
