CRIMES OF THE HEART
a play by BETH HENLEY
When designing CRIMES OF THE HEART, I was intrigued by the idea of how this house has spanned three generations and sought to incorporate elements from each generation into the design. The first generation installed the scenic wallpaper, the second generation updated the sink and cabinets and added the porch as an addition. The current generation replaced the flooring and appliances. This starting point provided framework for what this house could be. Further touches were added to indicate evidence of who is currently living in it – Lenny’s “cot”, a get well soon bouquet, a Southern Gothic calendar, a phone with a giant chord, Lenny’s cookie, a single plate in the sink, and the hidden secret wine. I explored how the three sisters can always be off balance: having two chairs, a table and an island, the focus door as the back entrance, all aid in the sisters time with each other breaking down barriers.
