THE OTHER SHORE
a play by GAO XINGJIAN
One of the most controversial and important plays in contemporary Chinese drama, THE OTHER SHORE questions Buddhist ideals of Enlightenment and whether we as humans are living a full life and making some impact on the society around us. The design incorporates rope as a symbol of physical human connection and building. The audience is seated on Xingjian’s metaphysical “shore” in the round to confront the audience and represent our inability to reach the “other shore.”
